A founder of the Soviet school of evolutionary and adaptive physiology, studying how the nervous system adjusts organ function under stress; long-time director of the Pavlov Institute of Physiology. Leon Abgarovich Orbeli was an Armenian physiologist active in the Russian SFSR. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union and Armenian National Academy of Sciences. Leon Orbeli became the director of the Institute of Physiology in 1950.
